Engl 495: Bartleby internship
• Staff: 2 credits, fall and spring semester (=4 credits/year)
• Section/Copy Editors: 2 credits fall semester, 3 credits spring semester
(=5 credits/year)
• Junior Managing Editor: 3 credits, fall and spring semester (=6 credits/year)
• Senior Managing Editor: 4 credits, fall and spring semester (=8 credits/year)
Note: freshmen are not eligible for internship credit, though more than welcome to work with Bartleby.
~The internship is completely flexible around your schedule, with the exception of a mandatory meeting at free hour on the first and third Monday each month. You may miss up to one Monday meeting without penalty; for any other absence you must provide documentation; more than one undocumented absence is an automatic D.
Grading Criteria for Engl 495:
Staff member receiving an A:
• Reviews vast majority of all submissions in assigned genre (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or art).
• Writes consistently in-depth, thoughtful reviews.
• Submits these reviews in a timely fashion, over the course of the entire submission period.
• Responds consistently and thoughtfully to discussion questions about the submissions posted by the section editor.
• Volunteers for at least 50% of Bartleby activities such as fundraising, publicity, distribution, and soliciting submissions.
• Maintains close contact with section editor, and with managing editors and faculty advisor as appropriate; responds promptly to all communications; notifies editor of any absences or schedule conflicts in advance.
• Works independently, assuming full responsibility for his or her role at Bartleby and exhibiting a high degree of accountability at all times.
Staff member receiving a B:
• Reviews 75-80% of all submissions in assigned genre (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or art).
• Writes generally in-depth, thoughtful reviews, with occasional shorter reviews permissible.
• Submits these reviews in a timely fashion, over the course of the entire submission period.
• Responds consistently and thoughtfully to discussion questions about the submissions posted by the section editor.
• Volunteers for a substantial number of Bartleby activities such as fundraising, publicity, distribution, and soliciting submissions.
• Maintains close contact with section editor, and with managing editors and faculty advisor as appropriate; responds promptly to all communications; notifies editor of any absences or schedule conflicts in advance.
• Works independently, assuming full responsibility for his or her role at Bartleby and generally exhibiting a high degree of accountability.
Staff member receiving a C:
• Reviews at least 50% of all submissions in assigned genre (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or art).
• Writes reviews that show evidence of thoughtful reading, even if short in length.
• Submits these reviews in a timely fashion, over the course of the entire submission period.
• Responds to at least some of the discussion questions about the submissions posted by the section editor.
• Volunteers for some Bartleby activities such as fundraising, publicity, distribution, and soliciting submissions.
• Generally maintains close contact with section editor, and with managing editors and faculty advisor as appropriate; responds promptly to most communications; notifies editor of any absences or schedule conflicts in advance.
• Generally works well independently, accepting responsibility for his or her role at Bartleby and generally exhibiting a high degree of accountability.
Additional Criteria for each Section Editor:
• Reviews all submissions, with in-depth, thoughtful reviews, in a timely fashion over the course of the entire submission period.
• Facilitates discussion among staff about the submissions, by posing questions and encouraging analysis of the works submitted. (This can be particularly useful when a piece is first submitted, since the section editor should avoid writing the first review—instead, he or she can encourage others to read/respond by offering questions and ideas about the work.)
• Maintains close contact with staff and managing editors, keeping everyone informed about relevant matters and responding promptly to all communications.
• Takes a leadership role in volunteering for activities and events and attending meetings.
• Tracks staff performance and reports to managing editors in a timely fashion.
• Submits a detailed report by email to managing editors and faculty advisor by last day of class each semester, documenting all of the above.
